February 16: Becoming Human
Written by Nicholas Gwynne

Becoming Human

Greetings, Everyone!

We're going to be watch "Becoming Human", a NOVA special from PBS on human evolution. Specifically, we are watching the first part of the three-part series, "First Steps". This event is a (belated) celebration of Darwin Day, which was last Friday, the 12th of February. I hope you'll join us for this fascinating look at our evolutionary history.

Where did we come from? What makes us human? An explosion of recent discoveries sheds light on these questions, and NOVA's comprehensive, three-part special, "Becoming Human," examines what the latest scientific research reveals about our hominid relatives.

A more detailed description of the program is available at the NOVA link.

Haiti Earthquake
Written by Steve Shaw

As I am sure you are all aware, Haiti was recently struck by an earthquake that has left the country devastated. It is at times like these that it becomes necessary for us to come together to help our fellow man. This point should be especially relevant to us nonbelievers as without any gods to come to the aid of the suffering it falls to us to aid the less fortunate.

To this point the The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science along with 13 other atheist and skeptic organizations have created the group Non-Believers Giving Aid to donate money to two secular groups that are working tirelessly to relieve the suffering of the Haitian people.

100% of ones donation will go to Doctors without Borders and the International Red Cross to provide immediate aid to the people of Haiti.

It is often said of atheist that we are uncaring and unsympathetic to the suffering of others. Prove them wrong.

November 17: Defending Darwin
Written by Nick Gwynne

Darwin calls for us to defend evolution!

Ray Comfort has put out an introduction to On The Origin of Species which slanders Darwin's name and puts forth a bunch of tired old creationist arguments that have been debunked over and over again.

We are going to promote the truth about evolution in response to the distribution of these books, as well as just to celebrate Darwin's magnificent book.

Come join us to plan this wonderful event, sign up to hand out evolutionary materials, and get an evolution t-shirt! Bask in the glory of the resources we will be handing out, and just discuss general ideas.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009, begins at 7:00 pm (Please arrive at 6:50)
Location : 225 Wheeler

November 10: Tim on Christians
Written by Nick Gwynne

picture of Tim in a tuxedo

There is no Tim but Tim and I am his Prophet! The wondrous second coming of Tim has arrived! There will be fantastic joy and kittens and rainbows! Also, there will be TIM!

And he's going to talk to us about why Christians might not be as irrational as we think they are. It should be a relatively short presentation, followed by a great deal of discussion!

Tim will declare things like: "The Universe is like Nuclear Weapons: It doesn't do enough damage."

[ editor's note: Part of the magic is that this actually made some sense in context. ]

And as his prophet, I might even and up moderating the discussion.
Tim will choose where we eat.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009, begins at 7:00 pm (Please arrive at 6:50)
Location : 225 Wheeler
